This set of photographs is part of an ongoing project to document Travelling People. I was lucky to have worked on the nationally distributed ‘Traveller’s Times Magazine‘ for 5 years for The Rural Media Company. This gave me the opportunity to understand and get to know a little more about this community, as well as photograph and make audio recordings of them.
It always surprised me when Travellers from different parts of the country got together and seemed to know each other. Within this Travelling community there is great diversity: Romany Gypsies, Irish Travellers, English Travellers, Welsh Travellers and Scottish Travellers.
Sometimes it is hard not to take stereotypical photos, I tried to allow these subjects to present themselves as they wished. I trust that these images show respect and provide a positive view of a culture that is going through change. Government policy and advances in technology, as well as changes in agriculture and migration from other countries have all impacted on the way of life of Travelling People.
I appreciate the hospitality and respect that was shown to me from the people that I had the great fortune to be able to photograph.
These images are from one of the annual horse fairs held at Kenilworth in Warwickshire in 2013. I have other images from Stow and Appleby Horse Fairs which I have yet to edit.
