Home & Away
Thirty-eight black and white photographic prints taken in the 1980s and 1990s.
This exhibition showcases a small selection of images from my archive of around 300 black and white films taken over a 20 year period. Having around 10,000 frames to sift through has been an interesting exercise. I digitised 1000 images from which I’ve curated this selection of 38 prints. Following on from my 2025 exhibition ‘All Around Leominster’, I wanted to introduce images from other places whilst keeping Leominster in the ‘viewfinder’. The selected photographs are presented in pairs, one ‘home’ image (Leominster) with one ‘away’ image (elsewhere). Each pair is connected by subject matter or photographic style.
My aim isn’t to make any particular comparisons between the images, one place is not better than the other. Rather, it is about noticing the connections between Leominster and the wider world. We in Leominster can be proud of our town, and these images situate Leominster as both an entryway and a point of return. It is always nice to come home.
When I took these photos I didn’t really appreciate how much things would change. Today I photograph because I enjoy the process and challenge of making, what I consider, a ‘good’ photograph. I set out to take pictures that convey what I can see, feel or think. Sometimes they are just for myself and aren’t seen by anyone else.
Back in the 1980s I was in my early 20s and still developing my ideas and photographic skills. I experimented a little, but restricted how many photos I took due to the cost of film and the time and expense of developing and printing at home.
Looking back, I wish that I had taken more, especially images of people and places that have gone. Since the digital era, which for me started in 2000s I have had the luxury of being able to take more photos, but I still have to remind myself to photograph the ordinary things that can so easily disappear.
